Serena Williams Nike Ad

Serena Williams is featured in a Nike ad, where she sets the standard of what a woman should be and what they should look like. She starts off by saying how she has been characterized as a tennis player for her strong muscular build, and how her occasional lack of a smile makes it seem like she is a monster. She also brings up the fact that people make remarks on her skin being too black for her all white tennis outfit, this strong contrast between colors shows how the media portrays what black women should wear. Many people pay attention to these visual characteristics about Serena Williams before her actual achievements. Serena thinks she is not the “right” kind of woman because of her looks, and this is because of the way media has portrayed women. The background music is inspirational which sets the tone for a ‘you can accomplish anything’ type of vibe.

The Thrift Store

I was recently at the mall shopping for clothes when I realized a lot of the expensive clothing items I noticed on the rack, were a fraction of the price at the thrift store, yet still the same quality. I was sort of confused and didn't really understand why someone would rather spend five times as much on something than to get it for cheap. Then it hit me, people would much rather buy their things from the store or at the mall because the connotation with shopping at the thrift store means you don't have as much money. I believe this ideology stems from media. Even with the literal name of the store, "Goodwill", it makes it seem like you're donating to people in need. Nobody wants to feel like they are in need or depend on others donations to wear clothes, it hurts one's pride. The distortion of this in media creates a false reality where the connotation with shopping from thrift stores is that "you're poor" versus "you know how to bargain...

PETA Advertisement

Following the holidays, an advertisement was recently produced by PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) showing how animals, which are widely gifted around the world during Christmas season, are not to be treated as products. This is because often times the animal is given to someone who is unable to take care of it, or they just don't want it period. This ad contained inspiring Christmas music in the background, conveying feelings of warmth, and then the camera pans to a fake illuminated dog who is tied to a pole on the side of the highway. It causes the audience to realize that this is an issue, because it definitely had that effect on me. Not only can it spread awareness, but it may actually spark one's failed conscious. I believe this ad will be successful because of the placement. Since it has been placed right before the holiday season, people are more in their senses about giving and taking. I think without little reminders like such, there would be less conside...

Media Log 1

As I compared different news outlet's analyzation of the situation on the migrant caravan on the Mexican Border, I found interesting portrayals of the situation. In the first paragraph of Migrant caravan shelter shutdown over 'bad' sanitary conditions as hundreds move to new facility by Fox News, says "Mexican authorities shut down a crowded, unsanitary and mud-filled shelter at a sports complex, moving the remaining migrants who want to enter the U.S. to a new, government-run facility" their choices of words like, "unsanitary" and "mud-filled" immediately strike us as disgusting ideas. Then they say how these people want to enter America, quickly making the viewer feel as though this is something disgusting and associates it with a negative connotation. This is in comparison to CNN's video, Cuomo reveals desperate reality in migrant camp, he says, "what is next? things can't stay this way." Immediately giving us the idea that...
